Improved intermediate shaft Defender - ENGAGE4X4 set in reinforced version. The Land Rover Defender TD4 has been equipped with a new engine and a new six speed gearbox from Getrag MT82 since 2007. However, since this gearbox was developed for the Ford Transit, it does not fit the Land Rover LT230 transfer case. To connect the Getrag gearbox with the Land Rover Defender transferbox, the manufacturer has developed a so-called Defender TD4 intermediate shaft in a housing instead of a cardan shaft connection to connect both gearboxes. In the first TD4 models this problem was not so present. Approximately in 2010 the part numbers of the flange were replaced. We assume there was a manufacturer change here. The built-in weak point of the Defender from factory ENGAGE4X4 improved intermediate shaft The flange of the Defender TD4 intermediate shaft is in a cast aluminum housing and was installed dry from the factory. The proximity to the exhaust pipe and thus constant temperature changes allows condensation to form in the splines and the intermediate housing. The gearing begins to corrode over time. The corrosion dust and load change impacts do the rest. The gearing steadily reduces. We have had vehicles with just about 18,000 km in our shop that have stopped at absolute wear. Failure of the Defender TD4 intermediate shaft means total loss of mobility. This is absolutely unfavorable for expedition vehicles traveling to remote regions in Africa, Asia, or Russia. The possible solutions for the problem of the Defender TD4 intermediate shaft There have been a few attempts to solve the problem, but all have been less than fruitful. Land Rover issued a circular instructing the dealers to use a special grease on the TD4 intermediate shaft, but this was not the solution in our opinion, some vehicles still had this problem several times. There was still the approach to lubricate the shaft with a kind of oil connection, here was not considered however. One builds in another weak point, an additional oil seal with the possibility for an additional oil loss. There are also cases that the shaft is broken under extreme loads, as it is also a material problem. High Performance Limited Slip Differential True Trac for Land Rover Defender. The ATB or LSD Limited Slip Differential True Trac with helical gearing has many advantages that outweigh the objections to other designs, friction discs or planetary gears. Minimal preload is required to engage the gears. However, this does not result in excessive wear or harshness. Limited Slip Differentials with helical gears are practically noticeable to the driver during normal road use because there is no friction between the gear and the guide. It behaves like a normal open differential. Function of Defender High Performance Limited Slip Differential How does this LSD differential with 'helical gears' work? There are six sets of helical gears mounted parallel to the axle. Each of these 'sun gears' drives six helical gears, which mesh with six corresponding helical gears, into the opposite 'sun gear' that is in turn driving. The important factor is that these helical gears are mounted in 'guides' in the center carrier, so any radial load on the helical gears will cause them to push against the side of the pocket, creating friction. This is why we use six guides versus three from other manufacturers, more guides means more friction and a better limited slip function. Comparison to 100% differential lock One disadvantage of the Land Rover Limited Slp Differential is that there is always a load on one wheel per axle. If there is no load, such as a cross axle, the wheel with traction would only see about three times the load on the wheel without traction, ie nothing. To overcome this, as mentioned earlier, the ATB is equipped with some preload springs to provide a lateral load without traction in the case of a transverse axle when that preload does not provide sufficient traction on the other side. The ASC differential lock has been tested by us over many years in extreme conditions. Offroad differential lock for Land Rover vehicles This is a perfectly designed 100% pneumatic differential lock. It can be mounted in the original Land Rover differential housing with minimal installation effort, i.e. without modifications to the axle housing. An electric differential lock and is significantly less reliable than a good accurately machined pneumatic version. One of the main requirements of the ASC lock, is absolutely no pressure loss, as this is one of the main problems with other air operated pneumatic locks. To achieve this, a static piston has been used instead of a rotating seal, which has been used in other valves and tends to leak in 80% of all assembled valves. The lantern ring is held in place with 4 pins that pass through the diff center Non crown gear side. Outside the diff center, the 4 pins are connected to a steel thrust ring. This assembly forms a sturdy steel cage, not plastic like other designs that tend to fail. The piston has a groove around the inside and outside diameters into which O-rings are inserted.
