With the Land Rover's permanent all-wheel drive system, all four wheels transmit power to the ground. Especially off-road, the Land Rover Defender drivetrain and thus the permanent all-wheel drive system excels. The traction of a permanent all-wheel drive system and the driving characteristics on the road have a clear advantage over vehicles without all-wheel drive. The permanent all-wheel drive system ensures maximum stability when cornering, even on loose surfaces, the Land Rover drivetrain keeps you on the safe side. Thanks to its chassis and drivetrain, the Defender is one of the most off-road capable production SUVs in the world.
Land Rover drivetrain all-wheel drive system and axle parts
The Land Rover Defender's permanent all-wheel drive system allows it to operate continuously in a wide range of off-road conditions without having to be manually engaged. In off-road use, the center differential can be locked via a small selector lever, which is known as a longitudinal lock. In on-road use, the center differential in the transfer case functions much like an open axle differential, distributing power between the front and rear axles. The transfer case, also known as the LT230-type center differential, was also installed in the Discovery 1 and Range Rover Classic. There were only minor changes to this system from 1985 to 2016. Defender driveshafts and joint kits and how they work.
As always, the Defender drivetrain is a bit undersized for heavy off-road use. Damage often occurs when used for 100% differential locks, you can't do without drive shafts and matching joints. The shafts transmit torque to the wheel hub via the wheel driver, and the constant velocity joints ensure that the axle remains movable via the Defender's pivot bearings. In this way, power transmission is also possible during steering and, in the case of a steering axle, the drive shafts can compensate for the angles resulting from the steering angle. The constant velocity joints are so-called homkinetic joints and are protected from mud, water and dust by the pivot bearing housing.
Axle and driveline maintenance and service
Servicing the Land Rover Defender's drivetrain components is much easier than on other off-road vehicles with the rugged rigid axles and a transfer case flanged directly to the manual transmission make the Defender drivetrain a
