Original Land Rover Defender TD4 intermediate shaft
The biggest weak point in all Land Rover Defender TD4 models from 2007 to end of production is the intermediate shaft of the manual gearbox Getrag MT82 and the LT230 transferbox. The problem lies on the one hand in the fact that this shaft was installed ex works without grease, on the other hand condensation forms in the gearbox housing. The exhaust system is right next to it, so there are constant temperature differences and condensation even forms inside the gearing. Time does the rest. The gear teeth on the gear shaft and on the flange start to corrode. The constant load cycling reduces the gearing until it is completely worn down and spins out.
Newer Defender TD4 with 2.2 liter engines from the 2012 model year, have this problem sometimes much earlier. We had vehicles that stopped after only 15,000 km. After replacing the part number from LR006090 to LR030054, the quality of the transmission flange probably deteriorated significantly.
